A HANUKKAH PRAYER FOR A TIME OF DARKNESS
Creator of All and Rock of Ages,
In the time of the Maccabees once more You worked a miracle of light,
And it lasted eight days and eight nights.
In the dark of night, at the darkest time of year
We light candles in remembrance of the miracle,
One more each night until there are eight.

A
HANUKKAH WISH
At last! At last! Hanukkah is here!
The whole house is
bursting with
holiday cheer,
Pancakes are sizzling as hard as they can,
Browning
delectably
crisp in the pan.
Like the oil lamp in ancient history,
That burned on
and on miraculously,
And each flaming candle proclaims the great story
Of the Maccabean heroes, their deeds and their glory.

BLESSINGS FOR CHANUKAH
Blessed art thou, O God
our Lord,
Who made us holy with his
word,
And told us on this feast
of light
To light one candle more
each night.

THE COMING OF LIGHT
Even this late it happens:
The coming of love, the
coming of light.
You wake and the candles
are lit as if by themselves,
Stars gather, dreams pour
into your pillows,
Sending up warm bouquets
of air.
Even this late the bones
of the body shine
And tomorrow's dust
flares into breath.

DREIDELS
AND DANCING, LATKES AND LAUGHTER
On Chanukah we dreidel spin
And chocolate gelt we hope to win.
If we get Gimel ‘stead of Shin,
Let’s celebrate tonight.
We eat some latkes, oil-fried,
That balabustas made with pride,
With applesauce served on the side,
Our smiles sweet and bright.

THE FEAST OF LIGHTS
Kindle
the taper like the steadfast star,
Ablaze on evening's forehead o'er
the earth,
And add each night a lustre till afar,
An eightfold splendor
shine above thy hearth.

THE GLOW OF THE MENORAH
Sing a song for Hanukkah,
Dedicate our hope and
faith tonight.
Let the world see our
menorah glow,
It’s the Festival of
Lights.
Celebrate with family,
Find the love within your
heart and home,
Blessings on the special
Hanukkah,
Wishing one and all,
Shalom.

THE HANUKKAH CLASSROOM
Children in a circle listen
To the wondrous stories told,
Of the daring Maccabeans
And the miracles of old.
In the kitchen, pancakes sizzle,
Turning brown, they’ll soon be done.
Gifts are waiting to be opened,
Happy Hanukkah has begun.

HAPPY
CHANUKAH
Outside, snow is slowly, softly falling through the wintry
night,
In
the house, the brass menorah sparkles with the candlelight,
Children in
a circle listen to the wondrous stories told,
Of the daring Maccabeans
and the miracles of old.

LIGHT THE FESTIVE CANDLES
Light
the first of eight tonight,
The farthest candle to the right,
Light the
first and second, too,
When tomorrow's day is through,
Then light
three, and then light four,
Every dusk one candle more,
Till all eight
burn bright and high,
Honouring a day gone by.
